Bears Volleyball Drops HVMAC Decision to Yeshiva

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY - The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team could not maintain momentum from Monday's win over Medgar Evers College, falling in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18, 25-17, at defending HVMAC champ Yeshiva University on Thursday night.

Freshman middle blocker Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) continued his offensive emergence, tallying nine kills on an efficient .300 hitting percentage.  Junior and fellow middle Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) contribued seven kills.  Seniors Maciej Sadowski (Brooklyn, NY/Catherdral Prep) and Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) each recorded three digs for St. Joseph's (2-6, 0-2 HVMAC).

After a 4-4 start in the first set, the host Maccabees (6-10, 3-0 HVMAC) went on a 9-2 run to establish control and force a Bear timeout.  St. Joseph's would not get any closer then 4 points the remainder of the set and fell 25-13.  In set two, the Bears came out hot, winning the first four points.  Yeshiva answered, knotting the score at 7-7 and then 9-9.   St. Joseph's hung in through the middle of the set, trailing by only 1 at 17-16.  Yeshiva finished strong, closing out the set with an 8-2 run.  In set 3, the teams traded points early, and the score was again 7-7.  The Macs pulled away from a tight 10-9 advantage with 7 unanswered points to put the set and the match out of reach.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Thursday, March 8th when they visit Sarah Lawrence College for the first segament of a back-to-back, home and home with the Gryphons.  First serve in Bronxville is set for 6 PM.
