Bears Volleyball Drops Both Ends of Season-Opening Tri-Match

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped both ends of a season-opening  tri-match falling in straight sets to Berkeley College (NJ), 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) and succumbing to HVMAC foe Yeshiva University, 3-1 (25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16).

Berkeley (NJ) defeated Yeshiva, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 26-24) in the first match of the day and improved to 2-0 on the season. Yeshiva picked up their third win of the season, moving to 3-6 and St. Joseph's fell to 0-2 on the young season.

In the opener, Berkeley (NJ) saw 10 kills from Abel Cedeno as the Knights amassed 32 kills and collectively hit .240 for the match. The Knights also used a tough jump serve to record 15 service aces. David Jimenez handed out a match-high 14 assists.

St. Joseph's found trouble finding their groove offensively , combining for 15 kills but committed 16 hitting errors with seven service errors while collectively hitting -.012.  Senior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) eight kills led the offense while also coming up with six digs. Mohamed El Amri (Tangier, Morocco/American School of Tangier) led the defense for the Bears bringing up seven digs and sophomore Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) had six kills to go along with five digs. Junior Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens) dished out a team-high 12 assists.

In the second match of the day, St. Joseph's managed to get the offense going winning the second set, producing a team-match-high 11 kills and .194 hitting average. Urshela led the attack with a team-high 10 kills to go along with eight digs to help anchor the defense with Torres who contributed eight kills and a team-high 12 digs. Freshman Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) contributed five kills and was second on the team with nine digs. Husain had a team-high 23 assists.

Yeshiva was led by Elchanan Margolis who had a double-double with 10 kills while bringing up a match-high 25 digs. Daniel Lapson contributed 12 kills with only two errors and Adam Rhodes controlled the offense handing out a match-high 33 assists.

St. Joseph's continues their seven-match road stand with a HVMAC matchup against Sarah Lawrence on Friday, February 15th with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
