BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped a pair of straight-set non-conference decisions to Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15), and Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon at the Brooklyn College West Quad Center.
St. Joseph's (0-5) was led by sophomore Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) who paced the Bears attack with 10 kills over the tri-match. Junior Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens) guided the offense with 20 assists also adding 10 digs and senior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) anchored the defense with 15 digs.
In their opening match against Brooklyn College (3-4), the Bulldogs amassed 38 kills and a .253 hitting percentage and never trailed in the contest. Urshela had four kills and Torres added three kills.
In their finale against Albertus Magnus (5-3), the Bears fared much better and in set two clipped a 15-9 deficit to two 19-17, but the Falcons closed out the set scoring six of the final eight points. The Bears held an early lead in the third stanza, 7-5, but Albertus used a 6-1 run to take the lead back for good.
St. Joseph's has a week off before returning to the court for their 2013 home opener at Brooklyn Technical High School, hosting Medgar Evers College on Monday, March 4 with first serve slated for 7:30 p.m.
