Urshela Takes Home HVMAC Men's Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) has been named the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team to their first win of the season against Sarah Lawrence to level the season series on March 1st.

Urshela flirted with a triple-double, putting down a team-high 10 kills with a .350 hitting percentage, bringing up nine digs and posting an SJC-record eight blocks in the Bears only match of the week. The sophomore posted a match-high 16 points in the straight-set victory.

The outside hitter currently leads the Bears with 61 kills and is ranked second in the HVMAC with 2.65 kills per set. Urshela also leads the conference with a .164 hitting percentage and 0.91 blocks per set.

The award is the first earned by a Bear this season but is the second time in the sophomore's career that he has been named HVMAC Player of the Week after earning the honor on March 19th of last season. The outside hitter was recognized as HVMAC Rookie of the Week two times last year and was named to the All-Conference Team. Urshela also plays for the men's soccer team at St. Joseph's and earned All-Conference Team honors for the 2012 season.

The Bears conclude their three-game homestand with a matchup against Cooper Union on Friday, March 8th at Brooklyn Technical High School with first serve set for 7:30 p.m.
