Men’s Volleyball Pushes Brooklyn to the Limit in Hard-Fought Loss

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Senior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) had nine kills and two blocks and the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team earned four set points against their borough rivals, but fell to Brooklyn College on the road in straight sets on Monday evening, 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 28-26).

How it Happened

The Bears (0-5) rallied from a five-point deficit, 21-16, late in the opening set winning five-straight to level the frame at 21-all and extended it into an 8-2 run to gain a set point, 24-23, after trailing for most of the frame. But the navy and gray were unable to steal the set with the Bulldogs (2-0) winning four of the final five points.

SJC won the first three points of the second stanza, but a 7-1 run put the hosts up for good. A Salomons kill midway through the frame pulled the Bears within one, 12-11, but the Bulldogs ballooned their lead with an 11-2 outburst and held on for a two-set lead.

The third set saw a series of runs exchanged by both squads. Brooklyn added to a 13-11 lead with an 8-2 spurt to take a 21-13 lead before the Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) had a solo block and three kills over five points to jump-start an 11-2 spurt that knotted the set at 23-all and gained a set point at 24-23. Both teams sided out for four straight points as the Bears gained two more set points, but were unable to extend the match as the Bulldogs won three straight to shut down the Bears rally.

For the Bears

  • Sean Salomons paced the attack with nine kills and two solo blocks.
  • Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) followed with seven kills and a game-high-tying 15 digs.
  • Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy added five kills and three solo blocks.
  • Timothy Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) handed out 21 assists on the Bears 26 kills.
