Salomons Posts Match-High 14 Kills but Men’s Volleyball Falls to Saint Elizabeth

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Middle Blocker Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) put up a match-high 14 kills, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (0-6) fell to the College of Saint Elizabeth (2-2) at The Hill Center, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
The Eagles led early on until SJC rallied for three unanswered points with back-to-back kills from Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) and Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) to tie the score at 10. Saint Elizabeth went on to close the set on a 15-6 run to take a 1-0 lead, out-hitting the Bears .450-.000 in the first.

After a 4-0 CSE lead, the second set featured nine ties with the Bears clinging to a slim lead for most of it. The visitors clawed back going ahead 23-20, but two kills from Salomons and four Eagle errors gave St. Joseph's a 26-24 set victory to tie the match at one.

The third was a back-and-forth affair as well with the scored tied at 10 after an SJC service error. Saint Elizabeth went on an 8-2 spurt to take control, but the Bears countered with a 5-1 rally, including an assisted block from St. Rose-Cuffy and Eddy, to cut the deficit to two. The SJC offense stalled there, however, as they didn't score for the rest of the frame to go down 2-1.

St. Joseph's kept battling in the fourth as they took a 10-7 lead after another kill from Salomons. The lead changed once again after a 7-1 run from the Eagles and they never relinquished the advantage, winning set four 25-19 behind three kills from Daniel Chavez.

  • Salomons led the team with 14 kills and 14 points, followed by Tim Driscoll (Staten Island N.Y.) and his nine kills (nine points, seven digs, three assists).
  • Eddy finished with six kills, six digs, and two total blocks.
