Men’s Volleyball Drops Home Result to Medgar Evers in Four

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After claiming the first set in their non-conference finale, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped the next three sets to Medgar Evers College on Thuraday evening; falling 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 14-25, 16-25).

How it Happened

Despite falling into an early 3-0 hole, the Bears (1-5) used kills from Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) and Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) to tie the opening set at 8 apiece. Frank Arevalo (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) slammed a kill to give the Bears the lead, 9-8. SJBK held onto the advantage for much of the set before the visitors used three-straight kills to reclaim the lead 21-20. Five of the last seven points went the way of the navy and gray to claim as they claimed the set, 25-23

The second stanza started out as a back-and-forth affair, with Medgar Evers (3-1) trailing 5-4, they used a five-point run to lead 9-5. Holding on to the advantage for the remainder of the set, a 9-4 run closed out the set in the Cougars' favor, 25-13.

The visitors held the lead throughout the third, possessing a 10-point margin at 20-10, their largest of the set. Medgar Evers ultimately took the set by 11, 25-14.

The Bears led 3-1 before an early 8-0 run saw the Cougars pull away, taking the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.

For the Bears

  • Reigning Skyline Conference Libero of the Week Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) brought up a team-best 18 digs.
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) had 13 digs, 15 assists, and a pair of blocks.
  • Helfant nearly posted a double-double, totaling eight kills and nine digs. he also had a pair of sevice aces.
  • Tello finished with six kills and five digs.
  • Saint-Jean brought up six digs and served an ace.
