Men's Volleyball Drops Skyline-Opening Tri-match to Ramapo, Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team suffered a pair of conference-opening defeats as part of a trimatch hosted by the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Bears were dealt an 0-3 loss to Ramapo College (7-25, 13-25, 10-25) before losing to the Dolphins by the same margin (23-25, 22-25, 17-25).

How it Happened vs. Ramapo

The Roadrunners (8-6, 2-0) took full control of the opening set thanks to a pair of 5-0 spurts, taking the frame 25-7.

Despite keeping pace with Ramapo early in the second, with the Bears (1-7, 0-2) drawing the set level at six, the Roadrunners separated themselves with a four point run at 16-10 and again at 20-11. They'd claim the set 25-13.

A 10-1 run set the tone for the opposition. Kills from Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International), Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International), and Frank Arevalo (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) weren't enough as the Roadrunners clinched the straight-set win.

The Bears led by as many as 6-1 in the first set. Trailing 9-4, the Dolphins (4-9, 1-1) scored five unanswered to tie the match at nine, later taking a 13-10 advantage. CMSV errors, and SJBK blocks, resulted in a 19-19 stalemate. Three ties and two lead changes followed, culminating in the Dolphins' 25-23 set win.

Headlined by kills from Helfant, as well as Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland), the Bears held the advantage for much of the second stanza, leading 13-9. However, a 6-1 run swung the lead in the hosts' favor, 15-14. Mount Saint Vincent weathered off a pair of ties to take the set 25-22.

The third frame began with a 5-4 St. Joseph's lead. Tied at nine apiece, the Dolphins took the lead that they held onto for the rest of the set. Another 6-1 run secured the match win for the hosts.
