Men’s Volleyball Drops Second Straight to St. Joseph’s Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — For the second consecutive match, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of sibling school St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday afternoon from The Hill Center, 8-25, 14-25, 15-25.

How it Happened

The Golden Eagles (16-7, 10-0) established a gap early on in the opening set and, despite a pair of kills from Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International), the Bears fell 25-8.

Kills from Helfant and Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) early in the set saw the Bears come to within six points of the visitors, 14-8. SJLI ultimately pulled away with a 25-14 set win.

The Bears held the Golden Eagles to no more than a 10-point lead in the third set as Long Island took the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

For the Bears

  • Helfant had 10 kills and nine digs, both match-highs.

  • Frank Arevalo (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) and Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) each had three kills. The former also had six digs.

  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) dished out 15 assists.
