Lady Bears Softball Conclude Tucson Invitational With Two Losses

(TUCSON, AZ)  St. Joseph's College women's softball wrapped up their appearance in the Tucson Invitational Games with Pomona-Pitzer College 10-1 and St. Mary's University 10-0.  Despite the 1-5 start, this has been the most successful showing by a Lady Bears team in three trips to Tucson.  In addition to picking up their first win in Arizona, St. Joseph's had respectable performances in all their losses, including two losses that went the full seven innings.

In St. Joe's first game of the day, Pomona-Pitzer scored three runs in the second inning, but the damage could have been worse as the Sagehens left the bases loaded.  Pomona scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth as a result of two Lady Bear miscues.  St. Joseph's went down in order for the first three frames, but staged a small rally in the fourth drawing three walks to load the bases with no out and the heart of the order coming up.  A one-out single from Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) accounted for the only run and hit of the game for St. Joseph's.  Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) received the loss, striking out six and giving up six earned runs.

In their last game of the invitational, St. Joseph's could not stop the Saint Mary's bats which sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening frame, scoring eight on seven hits.  Chiaramonte and Caitlyn Kakavas (Queens, NY/St. Agnes) both singled for the only hits of the game for the Lady Bears.  St. Joseph's also drew four walks for the game.  Lisa Scheer (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) started on the mound and received her third loss on the season.

For the six-game set, Palmieri led the Lady Bears with four hits and two RBIs.  Senior captain Theresa Mendez (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) had three hits, with a double and four runs scored.  Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne) and Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) each knocked into two runs each.  Chiaramonte and Kakavas each had two hits.

St. Joseph's returns to the field on Wednesday, March 25 for their home opener against Albertus Magnus College.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at National Grid field in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY.
