Vargas Awarded HVWAC Softball Player of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) was named the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Softball Player of the Week after helping lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team to a 4-3-1 record during the past week.

Vargas finished the week as the Lady Bears leading hitter going 9-for-15 (.600) at the plate with seven runs scored, three doubles, three triples and eight RBI over an eight-game stretch. The senior pitcher/outfielder had the game-winning, walk-off triple in St. Joseph's comeback win over Lehman, erasing an eight-run deficit. Vargas finished the week leading the Lady Bears with a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .727 on base percentage. The senior also threw a one-hitter in the circle against New Rochelle going five innings while striking out five for her fourth win of the season.

Vargas receives HVWAC honors for the second consecutive week after taking home the Pitcher of the Week accolade last week. The award is the fourth earned by the senior this season after receiving the Association of Division III Independents Player of the Week honor last week while also being named HVWAC Player of the Week on March 19th.

St. Joseph's (7-10-1) returns to action as they travel to Bronxville to take on Sarah Lawrence for a doubleheader scheduled for Friday, April 12th at 4 p.m.
