Perillo & Marino Toss Combined No-Hitter, Vargas Fires One-Hitter as Softball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and senior Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) combined for a no-hitter in a 13-1 victory over Sarah Lawrence College and senior Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) fired a one-hitter completing a sweep of the Gryphons in the nightcap, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Field.

The Lady Bears (14-13-1) capture all four games of the season series against the Gryphons (0-27) registering the second no-hitter and and second one-hitter of the season.

The Gryphons took advantage of a Lady Bear miscue to load the bases in the first inning of the opener, pushing across one unearned run, but that would be all the scoring for the day. St. Joseph's responded three runs in the home half of the first, Marino belting a two-run single that proved to be the difference. St. Joseph's took a commanding lead with seven runs in the second to build a 10-1 advantage after two.

The nightcap produced a low-scoring affair as the Lady Bears could only muster a 3-0 advantage after four innings, but a five-run outburst in the fifth highlighted by a two-run double from Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) later followed by a two-run triple from Morgan Summers (Bellerose, NY/St. Mary's) put St. Joseph's over the eight-run threshold.

Senior Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the Lady Bears at the plate batting 3-for-5 and collecting four RBI, four runs, blasting her third home run of the season with a triple. Vargas also excelled at the dish batting 4-for-6 with a RBI, three runs scored and a triple.

Perillo earned the win in the opener and improved to 7-4 , striking out five and Vargas notched the win in the nightcap to bolster her record to 5-9.

After going down in order in the first, the Lady Bears scored two runs in the second, Vargas helping her cause with a leadoff triple and scoring on a Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) double.
