Lady Bears Sweep HVIAC Weekly Softball Honors

Lady Bears Sweep HVIAC Weekly Softball Honors

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—After leading the Lady Bears to their second consecutive 4-0 week, senior Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) was awarded the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Softball Player of the Week, while freshman Theresa Armano (Middle Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was named HVIAC Pitcher of the Week and freshman Maria Gentile (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) received Rookie of the Week honors.

Perillo slugged her first homerun of the season and drove in a team-high eight RBI last week in leading St. Joseph's to doubleheader sweeps over York and Baruch. The senior batted .444 (4-for-9), slugged 1.111 and scored seven runs. In Thursday's 13-2 finale against York, Perillo went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, both doubles, and drove in a game-high five runs. She also pitched one inning in relief to help the Lady Bears secure the sweep. On Saturday against Baruch, Perillo registered her first victory in the circle to finish off another sweep. She also helped her own cause with a fence-clearing three-run homerun in the first inning.

This is Perillo's second career HVIAC Player of the Week honor. The senior leads the Lady Bears with 12 RBI.

En route to her second consecutive HVIAC Pitcher of the Week award, Armano finished 2-0 and pitched to a microscopic 0.78 ERA in the circle. The freshman took the ball in both doubleheader openers for the Lady Bears. Against York, she surrendered one earned run and fanned five batters in five innings of work. On Saturday, Armano held Baruch to just two unearned runs in four innings to register her fourth consecutive victory.

Gentile batted .667 (4-for-6) with one RBI to earn her first career weekly award. The freshman hit safely in three of four games, highlighted by a 2-for-3, one-RBI performance against York in the doubleheader opener. Gentile was also perfect in 13 chances at first base.

Riding eight straight victories, St. Joseph's will hit the road on Thursday for a doubleheader meeting (4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) with Sarah Lawrence College.
