Softball's Streak Halted Following Twinbill Sweep at Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team (15-13) had their seven-game winning streak halted visiting borough foe Brooklyn College on Thursday, falling 9-1 in game one and suffering an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs struck first in the opener, using a pair of RBI singles off the bats of seniors Kimberly Brennan and Nathalie DeJesus to move up 2-0.

As the Lady Bears' offense remained quiet, Brooklyn tacked on three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to build a substantial advantage.

With opposing starter Kayla Hill one out away from a no-hitter in the top of the fifth, junior Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) delivered a single down the right field line to finally get St. Joseph's in the hit column. Sophomore Kristin Ferrigno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) followed with an RBI-single to left, ending any hope of a shutout as well.

But Hill would secure the victory, her ninth of the season, allowing just two hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) suffered the loss, falling to 6-7.

Game two played out similarly to the opener with the Lady Bears falling behind early as their offense struggled to mount an attack.

Junior Samantha Rodriguez paced the Bulldog's offense with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate to go along with a game-high four RBI.

Rodriguez got Brooklyn on the board with an RBI-single in the first inning and followed that up with another RBI-single in the third. The junior then highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a run-scoring double.

To cap off her dominant performance, Rodriguez delivered a walk-off inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the eight-run rule and secure the sweep.

Brooklyn put forth another no-hit bid in game two, but senior Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) connected for St. Joseph's lone hit in the top of the sixth.

Brooklyn starter Kimberly Brennan tossed a one-hit shutout to earn her third victory, while freshman Theresa Armano (Middle Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had her four-game winning streak in the circle snapped, dropping to 8-6 on the season.

Looking to rebound, the Lady Bears face a quick turnaround facing Yeshiva University in a conference clash on Friday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
