Ferrigno and McGowan Named HVIAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In the final Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekly awards of the season, sophomores Kristin Ferrigno and Jamilynn McGowan have been named HVIAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week ending April 26th in an announcement by the conference earlier today.

Ferrigno was the catalyst for the Lady Bears offense batting .500 (9-for-18) out of the leadoff spot with a .571 on-base percentage. The sophomore third baseman was the only Lady Bear to hit successfully in five of six games this past week helping St. Joseph's to a 3-3 mark. A Brooklyn, N.Y. native from Bishop Kearney, Ferrigno also scored eight times and drew three walks. Over a crucial USCAA Top 10 doubleheader with Briarcliffe, she batted 6-for-7 and scored four times.

McGowan compiled a 2-1 record in the circle with a 4.28 ERA. A Staten Island, N.Y. product from Michael J. Petrides, McGowan tossed two complete games, including one shutout, and struck out 12. She shutout HVIAC foe Yeshiva throwing five scoreless innings, surrendering just five hits and fanning four. In a pivotal Top 10 USCAA matchup against Briarcliffe on Sunday, McGowan held the Bulldogs to three runs in the opener, scattering six hits over seven innings, striking out four more, to improve to 8-7 on the season.

Ferrigno receives Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career having received Rookie of the Week honors twice last season. McGowan was a two-time Pitcher of the Week last season and receives the accolade for the first time this season.

After a doubleheader sweep of HVIAC foe College of New Rochelle yesterday, the Lady Bears (20-14) have reached the 20-win mark for the first time since 2012. Currently ranked No. 8 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll, the team awaits a selection to the 2015 USCAA Softball National Championships when bids are announced on Friday afternoon. St. Joseph's will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, May 2 against sibling rivals St. Joseph's (Long Island) at Padavan-Preller Field starting at 1 p.m.
