Gomez Leads Softball’s Offense in Defeats of Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team swept their non-conference doubleheader from borough rivals Brooklyn College, 12-1 and 6-0, on Friday afternoon. Junior infielder Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif/Sonora) went 4-for-6 over the two games with four RBI and a pair of runs scored while starting pitchers Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif/Mission Hills) and Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) earned their first wins of the season in the circle.

How it Happened (Game 1):

A pair of runs scored on first-inning singles from Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif/Rosemont) and Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills), 2-0. An additional four runs crossed the plate on defensive miscues from the hosts.

Following a scoreless second, a pair of runners scored on Gomez's two-RBI single to extend the Bears' advantage to 8-0 in the third. The Bears reached double figures later in the inning before the Bulldogs saw their lone run of the twin bill score on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning, 11-1.

Gomez's single in the top of the fifth scored Poppett, who reached base on a leadoff double, to seal the 12-1 scoreline.

How it Happened (Game 2):

The first three innings saw the Bears registering the only two hits of the contest. Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) and Mecham each had RBI singles to open the scoring in the top of the fourth. McKeon crossed the plate on a Brooklyn College wild pitch and Mecham scored on a two-bagger from Gomez. The Bears finished the inning with a 5-0 lead.

Brianna Kilimet (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) singled in the Bears' sixth run in the seventh inning to cap off the scoring.

For the Bears (Game 1):

  • Gomez had three RBI on three hits. She stole a pair of bases.

  • Van Der Kamp and Logreco each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

  • Nicole Trani's (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) two hits were both doubles, scoring a run with one RBI.

  • Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) each had two hits to go with an RBI and run.

  • Poppett batted 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs. She struck out eight and walked four en route to her first win of the campaign in the circle.

For the Bears (Game 2):

  • Gomez's lone at-bat was an RBI double. She walked twice in the contest.

  • Kilimet and Kristen Oddo (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) each had two hits. The former batted in a run while the latter scored a run.

  • Oddo swiped the lone Bears' bag of the game.

  • Gomez, Kilimet, and Van Der Kamp all hit for extra bases in the affair.

  • Mecham tossed seven innings of two-hit ball in her first appearance of the season to earn the win.
