Softball Outslugs, No-Hits Yeshiva in Skyline-Opening Doubleheader

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team opened their 2023 Skyline Conference slate with 26-0 and 18-0 wins over Yeshiva University on Thursday afternoon.

Each Bear registered at least one hit in either game with Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Kristen Oddo (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) notching multi-hit games in both contests.

In the circle, Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) struck out 12 batters while conceding just two hits in the first game while the tandem of Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) tossed a combined no-hitter, striking out nine Maccabees between them.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Highlighted by triples from Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) and a home run off the bat of Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic), the navy and gray held in to an 11-0 advantage through two innings.

Heller brought in a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings with Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) and Oddo going for extra bases to send home two Bears each, confirming the scoreline.

How it Happened (Game 2)

As with the first game, the Bears plated 10. Logreco had a pair of RBI in her first plate appearance of the stanza, courtesy of a double, before hitting a three-run shot later in the stanza.

Poppett, helping her cause in the circle, tripled in a pair of runs in the second before Logreco's single brought in SJBK's 14th run, her sixth RBI of the game.

Four runs scored in the fourth inning, all coming on singles, to seal the 18-0 margin.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • The Bears' 26 runs matches the program record for runs in a game, set last season against Brooklyn College. Their 23 runs batted in surpassed the previous record, 22 vs. Medgar Evers, which dates back to April 2007.
  • Heinsch went 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored.
  • Logreco, Oddo, and Trani each had two hits.
  • Heller had a team-leading four RBI while Gomez, Heinsch, and Oddo had three.
  • Horn picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle. At the plate, she went 3-for-4 with two RBI and as many runs scored.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • The Poppett/Heller no-hitter is the first since Jessica Mecham against Brooklyn in the 2021 season. It is the program's first combined no-hitter since the duos of Jamilynn McGown/Kristen Candelaria and Jackie Perillo/Cassandra Molinari did so in a doubleheader against New Rochelle in 2014.
  • Combining for nine strikeouts, Poppett posted six K's while Heller had three.
  • Poppett and Heller also had two hits with the former scoring twice and sending home two runs.
  • Logreco's six RBI are a career-high. Her previous best was four, occurring three times last season, all against Skyline opposition.
  • Oddo went 2-for-4.
