Poppett Goes Yard, Softball Splits with Defending Skyline Winners Farmingdale State

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — A pair of three-run innings, headlined by a three-run homer off the bat of junior first baseman Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) fueled the St. Joseph's University,  N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team to an 8-5 win over defending Skyline Conference champions Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon.

The second game of the conference twin Bill saw the visitors' bats come alive, scoring in all but one inning, to win 8-2; salvaging the doubleheader split in the process.

How it Happened (Game 1)

The Rams' early two-run lead was erased by the Bears plating three in the bottom of the first inning. Arianna Heinsch's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) triple brought in Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) before Heinsch scored on a single by Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills). Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) crossed the plate on a ground out to round up the scoring in the stanza.

With two on and two out in the third, Poppett belted her first home run of the season over the left-field fence to extend the SJBK lead to 6-2. A fielder's choice and an error in the fourth increased the margin to 8-2.

A pair of RBI doubles for the visitors in the next two innings trimmed the Bears' lead to 8-5. Farmingdale State were unable to cut the navy and gray's advantage further in the seventh, sealing the 8-5 result.

How it Happened (Game 2)

The Rams scored runs in each of the first two innings. Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) doubled Logreco, the Bears' first run, before scoring on Poppett's single up the middle in the home half of the third inning.

A home run in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning set the tempo for FSC. An additional two runs scored in the sixth to confirm the 8-2 result.

  • Poppett hit her fifth-career home run. She finished 2-for-3.

  • Heinsch also hit for extra bases, doubling and tripling in the contest.

  • Logreco and Heller both had a hit, RBI, and run scored.

  • Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) improved to 5-2 on the campaign, striking out five.

For the Bears (Game 2)
