Horn’s Perfect Game Leads Softball to Victory; Doubleheader Sweep of Lehman

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Rookie pitcher Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) became the second pitcher in St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball program history to toss a perfect game, posting 11 strikeouts in a 12-0 win over Lehman College on Monday afternoon. The perfect game is the sixth in program history with the previous five coming from Alyson Chiaramonte '12 between the 2009-12 seasons.

Earlier in the day, the Bears defeated the Lightning, 9-0, thanks to three RBI from Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and two from Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont) and Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney); with the latter hitting her first-collegiate home run. Both contests concluded in the fifth inning.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Logreco's first-inning single plated the first two runs of the game. It was followed by a five-run second, featuring a pair of RBI doubles from Van Der Kamp and Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) to further the SJBK lead to 7-0. A lead-off single by Emily Burroughs (Escondido, Calig./San Pasqual) was followed by Scott's inside-the-park home run on a ball escaping the Lehman right fielder to give the Bears the 9-0 lead and eventual run-rule victory.

Heller conceded a pair of hits and a walk while striking out six, a new season-best for the freshman. Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) fanned five Lehman bats in two innings of relief.

How it Happened (Game 2)

A scoreless first was followed by RBI doubles from Logreco and Burroughs, sandwiched between Poppett's single up the middle, to give the Bears a 3-0 edge in the second. Now leading 4-0 in the fourth, Scott once again hit for extra bases, slapping a triple to right-center to begin an eight-run stanza. Van Der Kamp brought in three runs while Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) had a pair of RBI herself in back-to-back run-rule wins.

Horn struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced in the game, one shy of matching her previous best (12 vs. Yeshiva).

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Van Der Kamp and Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) each had two hits in the game.

  • Logreco drove in three or more runs for the second time this season.

  • Heller registered her third win of the season, tossing three innings.

  • Poppet allowed a single hit in the circle. At the plate, she finished 1-for-3.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Van Der Kamp drove in four runs, bringing her total on the day to six.

  • Logreco, Poppett, and Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) all went 2-for-3 and had three RBI combined.

  • Scott scored a pair of runs, going 2-for-2.

  • Horn's perfect game was the first since Chiaramonte's fifth and final perfect game against John Jay in 2012. It marks the second no-hitter of the season following the combined effort between Poppett and Heller against Yeshiva in late March.
