Softball Takes Two From Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team took both games of their Thursday afternoon doubleheader from Ramapo College, 1-0 and 5-3.

How it Happened (Game 1)

With Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) 60 feet away from scoring, Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) was able to bring the senior catcher home; the game's only run.

Coming off her perfect game to begin the week, Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) struck out seven Roadrunners. She gave up just four hits in her second consecutive shutout and third of the season.

How it Happened (Game 2)

Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppague) was responsible for the opening run of the contest, sending Heller home on an RBI single in the second inning. Heller, for her part, delivered the game's second run in the fourth. Ramapo cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth.

The home end of the fifth saw the Roadrunners tie the game at two on an RBI double to left. An SJBK defensive miscue allowed the hosts to take the lead later in the frame, 3-2.

However, the navy and gray's big sixth inning resulted in three runs on four hits. Emily Burroughs' (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) single scored Calabrese, the tying run, before Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) singled in a pair of runs to seal the 5-3 margin.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Heinsch and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) each went 2-for-3 in the game.

  • Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) had the lone stolen base in the contest.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Eight of the nine Bears in the starting lineup registered at least one base knock.

  • Heller went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

  • Brianna Kilimet (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) had the lone extra-base hit, a double in SJBK's three-run sixth inning.

  • Poppett went 4.1 innings in the circle with a pair of strikeouts. Heller, who was credited with the win, allowed two hits and a walk in 2.2 relief innings.
