Softball Suffers Defeats to Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team dropped a pair of conference decisions to Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday afternoon, 7-4 and 7-3.

How it Happened (Game 1)

The Bears got on the board in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney). However, the Knights plated a pair of runs in their half of the inning to lead 2-1.

Scott brought in the tying run in the fourth courtesy of a sacrifice fly before the hosts hit the Bears for four runs in the same inning, headlined by an Olivia Ferara two-run homer.

MSMC scored their seventh run, sandwiched between RBI singles from Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppague) in the fifth and Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) in the sixth, to confirm the 7-4 scoreline.

How it Happened (Game 2)

Heinsch scored the game's opening run in the first but the Knights responded with a pair of runs later in the frame, 2-1. They added to their lead in the fourth, bringing the score to 3-1.

Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) scored on a single from Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont) in the top of the fifth, narrowing the MSMC margin to one. However, the hosts distanced themselves from the Bears with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-2 advantage.

St. Joseph's added a run in the top of the seventh on a Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) but it was not enough as they fell 7-3.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Seven different Bears registered hits in the game while four crossed the plate.

  • Heinsch and Van Der Kamp each doubled.

  • Scott finished with two RBI while Calabrese and Heinsch had one each.

  • Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) suffered the defeat after 3.2 innings pitched and four earned runs.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Van Der Kamp went 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. She and Trani had the lone RBI of the game.

  • Van Der Kamp, Heinsch, and Poppett scored all three runs for SJBK.

  • Scott, Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills), and Brianna Kilimet (Valley Steam, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) all had 2-for-4 games at the plate.

  • Poppett tossed four innings and dealt the loss.
