Softball Snaps Four-Game Skid, Sweeps Old Westbury Under the Lights

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team earned a pair of wins over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Sunday night. Game one saw the Bears come out on top 3-2 while holding on to a 6-5 game-two triumph.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Nicole Trani's (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) sacrifice bunt successfully scored Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) in the second inning. The Panthers equalized on an RBI double in the top of the fourth but the navy and gray responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Trani's infield hit saw Emily Burroughs (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) cross the plate while a second sac bunt, this time from Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.Y./Point Pleasant), scored the Bears' third run.

A sixth-inning home run for the visitors saw the SJBK lead reduced to 3-2 however Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Cooper Hills) prevented further damage in the circle, striking out a pair of bats, while Brooke Horn (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) picked up her first collegiate save to preserve the one-run win.

How it Happened (Game 2)

Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) lead off the first with a triple and scoring on a sacrifice fly. She tripled her next time up, in the third inning, and scored on Bella Gomez's (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) single.

Following a pair of quick innings, Old Westbury scored on an RBI single in the top of the sixth.

As the skies opened up in the bottom of the sixth, both offenses came alive. Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) plated a pair of runs after knocking a two-bagger to left field. She scored on Trani's double before Burroughs' triple gave the Bears a 6-1 advantage.

The visitors assembled a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, headlined by an RBI single with nobody out and a two-RBI double with two outs to again reduce their deficit to one. Horn was able to get the final out to see out the 6-5 win and sweep over the Panthers.
