Trani Collect’s 100th Hit as Softball Secures Senior Day Sweep of Sarah Lawrence

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Senior shortstop Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) became the 19th player in St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball history to accumulate 100 career hits, doing so in the second game of their doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon. The Bears picked up 14-0 and 16-0 wins over the Gryphons, extending their winning streak to eight.

Trani, along with classmates Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant), Emily Burroughs (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual), Isabella Calabrese (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppague), and Kristen Oddo (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) were honored prior to the start of the twin bill in Senior Day ceremonies.

How it Happened (Game 1)

A slow start was followed by a 12-run third inning for the navy and gray with the senior class contributing to half of the run output. Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse also drove in four runs of her own on a pair of two RBI singles in the stanza. A pair of runs crossed the plate in the fourth to confirm the 14-0 scoreline. Heller tossed her third shutout of the season, improving to 8-2 on the year.

How it Happened (Game 2)

The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first inning with eight runs coming with two out. In her second at-bat of the frame, Trani's ball went over the SLC left fielder's head for her milestone hit.

Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) and Brianna Kilimet (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Hear Academy each had a pair of RBI over the course of the next three innings, in which the Bears scored six runs, to seal the 16-0 result.

Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) tossed a complete game, the fourth of her career, in the triumph.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • McKeon batted 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and as many runs scored and RBI.

  • Trani went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

  • Calabrese, Oddo, and Burroughs combined for five hits and four RBI.

  • At the dish, Heller went 2-for-4 with four RBI.

  • Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) had two hits.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Trani posted her second 4-for-4 game of the season.

  • Calabrese, Oddo, and Gomez all had three hits.

  • Poppet drove in four runs as she went 3-for-4 at the plate.

  • Kilimet went 2-for-2 to go with her two RBI
