Lady Bears Fall to Staten Island

St. Joseph's College Women's Basketball were overmatched against the College of Staten Island Dolphins, losing  64-90 on Wednesday night in a non-conference game at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center.   This is the first loss for the Lady Bears on the season and St. Joseph's remains winless against the Dolphins in 11 attempts.  Staten Island improves their record to 2-1.

It took the Lady Bears almost seven minutes to score their first field goal and halfway through the first stanza found themselves in a 20 point deficit.   The Dolphins took a 44-21 lead into the locker room at halftime capitalizing on 21 points coming off the Lady Bears 17 turnovers and 21 percent shooting.  Opening the second half, the Lady Bears continued to struggle as CSI opened with a 16-2 run in the first four minutes to give them the largest lead of the game at 37.  But SJC found some offense cutting the deficit to 16 with 5:25 to play on the sharp shooting of senior guard Melissa Velez (Queens, NY  / Mary Louis) who went 5 for 7 from behind the arc in the half for a team high 15 points.  Unfortunately, the Lady Bears wouldn't get any closer and the Dolphins closed out the game 90-64.

Despite the lopsided loss, the Lady Bears had four players in double digits.  Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY / St. Francis Prep) chipped in 14 and Allison Kavanagh (Queens, NY / Mary Louis) and Joanna Marciniec(Brooklyn, NY / Baruch) had 11 a piece.  The Dolphins also had 14 players in double figures, led by Allie Shanahan (18 points, 5 rebounds) and a double-double from Megan Sullivan (12 points, 15 rebounds).

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday for their home opener against City Tech.  The game is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Brooklyn Technical HS.
