Lady Bears Easily Defeat New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never turned back, defeating the College of New Rochelle, 69-27, in a HVWAC matchup on Tuesday night at the CNR Wellness Center.  Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) led three Lady Bears in double figures with 12 points.

McQuillan had another efficient shooting outing, shooting 6-for-10 from the field while swiping three steals, to lead St. Joseph's (10-11, 2-0 HVWAC).  The sophomore guard, who was recently named HVWAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, connected on her first four shots to score the Lady Bears first eight points, helping St. Joseph's pull away from the outset.

Junior forward Allison Kavanagh (Woodhaven, NY/Mary Louis) added 11 points with seven rebounds and freshman Teresa Mangan chipped in 10 points with five rebounds, both coming in as reserves.  Sophomore Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) and senior Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) scored nine points each, Serewko netting her first career three-pointer.

Five-time HVWAC Rookie of the Week, Elizabeth Johnston led the Blue Angels with 13 points, grabbing game-high eight rebounds.  Kristinal Nilaj added eight points with eight rebounds.

St. Joseph's held New Rochelle to only four field-goals in the opening frame, taking a commanding 37-10 lead at halftime.  The Blue Angels found some offense in the second half, but were no match for the Lady Bears offense that shot 45 percent for the game with crisp ball movement that generated assists on more than half their field goals made.

St. Joseph's sits in tie atop the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference with Albany College of Pharmacy (6-10, 2-0 HVWAC).  The two squads face each other to determine the regular season champion on Saturday, February 6th as the opening game of a doubleheader.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School.
