Albertus Magnus Soars Past Lady Bears

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Albertus Magnus Falcons jumped out to a 19-2 lead and never looked back defeating the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team 83-51 on Wednesday evening.  Junior Kendrea Walker led the Falcons with 23 points and 14 rebounds while sophomore Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) led the Lady Bears with 10 points.

Marciniec opened the scoring with a jumper on St. Joseph's opening possession, but Albertus Magnus answered with three straight three-pointers to spark a 19-0 run.  A Marciniec three-pointer at the 10:15 mark capped an 11-3 run that cut the deficit to 10 points, 24-14, but the Lady Bears were unable to trim the lead to single digits, trailing 43-31 headed into the locker rooms.

Another poor second-half shooting performance, where St. Joseph's made only six field goals, allowed Albertus to pull away and build a 30 point lead by the midway point through the frame, which they held steady until the final buzzer.

Albertus dominated in all facets shooting 48 percent from the field, the highest by an opponent this season, and had a 58-32 rebounding advantage.  Despite committing 23 miscues, St. Joseph's won the turnover battle as the Falcons committed 30 turnovers.

Marciniec was the only Lady Bear to finish in double-figures and shot 4-for-9 from the field, including two three-pointers.  The sophomore guard grabbed four rebounds coming in as a reserve.  Sophomores Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) and Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) each added nine points.  Binckes shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and McQuillan dished out four assists and swiped four steals.  Freshman Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) added eight points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

For Albertus Magnus (6-9), freshman Shanilya Bush scored 19 points, including 5-for-9 from behind the arc and dished out a game-high six assists.  Senior Krystal Bryant also grabbed 14 rebounds.  Sophomore Elizabeth Williams chipped in 11 points.

St. Joseph's (7-10) returns to action on Saturday, January 23 hosting York College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School.
