Lady Bears Tame Penn State Fayette at USCAA Nationals

UNIONTOWN, PA – Freshman Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) poured in a career-high 20 points to lead the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team to a 76-60 victory over Penn State Fayette in the consolation round of the 2010 USCAA National Basketball Tournament.

Mangan shot 8-for-15 from the field and perfect from behind the arc, knocking down three triples.  Sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) contributed 15 points .  Forwards Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and Allison Kavanagh (Woodhaven, NY/Mary Louis) added six points each with the junior Kavanagh swiping a game-high six steals and the freshman Doran pulling down seven rebounds, sharing team-high honors with Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis).  Junior Tara Gleason (Woodside, NY/Stella Maris) chipped in seven points, matching her season high.  Sophomore Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) dished out a game-high five assists, setting a new career best.

Penn State Fayette (6-19) placed three Roaring Lions in double-figures led  by a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double from Kayla Hatfield.  Kasey Ruble added 13 points before fouling out and Jennifer Thomas had 12.  Nicole Garrety grabbed a game-high 14 boards.

Fayette, the host school for the tournament and #12 seed, grabbed the early lead breaking the full court Lady Bears pressure to build a seven point advantage, 9-2.  St. Joseph's took their first lead of the game at the 8:03 mark and extended to as many as seven points before leading by only four at the half, 29-25.

In the second stanza, the Lady Bears pressure broke open the game, forcing 15 turnovers helping St. Joseph's pour in 47 points on 44 percent shooting to pull away from the Roaring Lions.  The Lady Bears advantage extended to double digits within the first five minutes and they led by as many as 25 before closing out a 76-60 victory.

St. Joseph's (16-13) will play their final game of the tournament against #7 seed St. Mary of the Wood (18-11) in the ninth place game on Friday, March 5 at noon.  Follow the action on the live game tracker at www.sjcbears.com.
