Keystone Pulls Away From Lady Bears in Second Half

BROOKLYN, NY – After being separated by only two points at half, the Keystone College outscored the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team 41-21 in the second half to take an 88-66 non-conference victory in the nightcap of a double-header at Brooklyn Technical High School on Saturday.  Freshman guard Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) paced the Lady Bears for the third straight game scoring 15 points.

The Lady Bears found themselves trailing 16-5 early after making only one field goal in the first five minutes.  Keystone remained firmly in control for most of the opening frame building its largest lead of 16, 38-22, with 6:44 left before intermission.  St. Joseph's stormed back into contention to trail by four with a 16-4 run over three minutes capped by an Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) trifecta, who scored seven of her 11 first-half points during the run.  In the final seconds of the half, Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) made a steal, pushed the ball up to McQuillan who dished to a cutting Mangan who made a layup to send the Lady Bears in the lockers trailing by two, 47-45.

It would be all Keystone in the second stanza as St. Joseph's went scoreless over the first five minutes and the Giants extended their lead to 13 points which they held firmly in double-digits.  After shooting 35.1% in the opening half, the Lady Bears struggled after the break, only making six field goals and shooting a paltry 16.7% including 0-for-8 from distance.  Keystone improved their shooting in the frame to 47.1% and shot 4-for-6 from three-point land.

St. Joseph's held a slim advantage in the turnover battle 27-28 and both teams remained even scoring 23 points off turnovers.  Keystone held 59-44 rebounding advantage, largely in part to 39 defensive rebounds off the 54 Lady Bears missed shots.

Mangan's 15 points came on 7-for-18 shooting from the field and she added a pair of rebounds and assists.  McQuillan did most her work from the charity stripe where she went 8-for-9 and finished with 13 points.  She also dished out a game-high six assists and grabbed five rebounds, both season bests.  Sophomore guard  Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) chipped in a season-high nine points and grabbed a team-high and season-high matching seven boards.  Junior Elizabeth Shea (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored a season-high seven points in only eight minutes of work.

Keystone (3-6) was led by a near triple-double from junior guard Ellen Fallon who amassed 25 points, 10 steals and nine rebounds.  Junior guard Sarah Barreto also netted 23 points while grabbing six rebounds.  Junior forward Melinda Moore turned in a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double coming in as a reserve.

St. Joseph's (5-9) returns to the hardwood on Monday, January 11 as the opening game of a road doubleheader against Brooklyn rival City Tech.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
