Lady Bears Fall to NJCU at Izod Center

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Playing on the floor of the NBA New Jersey Nets, the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team fell to New Jersey City University (2-7) 75-68.  Sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) led all scorers with 24 points, setting a new season high.  Ebony Cunningham led five Gothic Knights in double figures with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double.

Junior forward Allison Kavanagh (Woodhaven, NY/Mary Louis) also set a new season high, posting her first double-double of the season, amassing 18 points and 11 rebounds.  McQuillan broke out of her two-game shooting slump, going an efficient 10-for-13 from the field.

St. Joseph's jumped out to an early nine point lead connecting on seven of their first eight shots building a 15-6 lead.  NJCU jumped back into the game with a 10-0 run capped by a Latifah Johnson layup that gave the Gothic Knights their first lead of the game, 17-18.  Both teams exchanged the lead several times, before NJCU jumped out to their largest lead of the half, 30-24, with 2:46 left in the half.  St. Joseph's closed the frame scoring the six unanswered points to enter the locker room tied 30-30.

In the second stanza, St. Joseph's built a six-point lead and led for most of the frame until a 10-3 Gothic Knight run took back the lead at 7:56, 55-54, which they wouldn't relinquish.  NJCU extended their advantage to six points with 5:22 remaining and the Lady Bears made one last attempt at a comeback, cutting the deficit to two with jumpers from McQuillan and freshman Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's).  St. Joseph's was unable to convert on the offensive end and NJCU extended their lead by as many as eight at the free-throw line with the Lady Bears forced to foul.

St. Joseph's outshot NJCU from the field 40.3% to 33.3% but struggled from the free-throw line shooting only 40.9% (9-for-22).  The Lady Bears continue to struggle from distance where they have shot 16.8% all season, and made only one triple all game (1-for-11).  NJCU held a slim advantage on the boards (56-51) but capitalized on the 26 Lady Bears miscues to score 35 points which proved to be the difference.

Senior Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) added 10 points  and seven rebounds,  her third game in double figures this season.  Mangan finished with six points, all coming in the second half.

For NJCU, Lindia Fischer also turned in a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double. Latifah Johnson chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds.  Maxine Kaminski and Ashley Freeman each added 11 points to round out the Gothic Knights in double figures.

St. Joseph's falls to 4-6 on the season and 3-2 all-time at the Izod Center.  The Lady Bears return to the hardwood for a non-conference tilt against Old Westbury on Wednesday night on the road.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
