Lady Bears Defeat Yeshiva in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's basketball (1-0, 1-0 HVWAC) extended a four-point lead at half to defeat Yeshiva University (0-2, 0-1 HVWAC), 80-56, in an HVWAC matchup to open the 2009-10 season in front of a packed house at Brooklyn Tech.

Senior Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) fell one rebound shy of a double-double leading the Lady Bears with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds.  Sophomore Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) also chipped in a team-high 13 points coming in as a reserve.

A pair of free throws by Yeshiva's Shir Fuchs tied the game for the fifth time at 20-20 at the 12 minute mark in the first half, but the Lady Bears went on a 15-4 run over the next three minutes sparked by Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Allison Kavanagh (Woodhaven, NY/Mary Louis) to take an 11 point lead, their largest of the half.  The Maccabbees fought back to close the deficit to 38-34 at halftime.

St. Joseph's took control of the game coming out of the locker room with a 21-4 run in the first six minutes of the frame, extending the lead to 20 and Yeshiva wouldn't come any closer.  The Lady Bears capitalized on the Yeshiva 28 turnovers converting them to 23 points.  St. Joseph's depth also proved to be a factor with the Lady Bear bench outscoring Yeshiva 54-6.

Kavanagh and McQuillan finished with 12 points apiece rounding out the four Lady Bears in double figures.  Coach Frank P. Carbone utilized his entire bench with each player seeing at least 10 minutes and contributing at least one point in the victory.

Two Maccabbees turned in double-double performances.  Jaclyn Ramras scoring a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds and Avigail Varnai adding 14 points and 12 rebounds.

St. Joseph's returns to action travelling to Pennsylvania to play in the Wilson College Tip-Off Tournament on November 21-22.  The Lady Bears face host Penn State-Altoona in the opening round on Saturday at 8 p.m. and will face either host Wilson College or Christendom College on Sunday at either 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.
