Women's Basketball Notches First Win Rolling Past Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, NY – All 12 Lady Bears recorded a field goal and combined to shoot 52% percent from the floor as the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team defeated Medgar Evers 79-41 in a one-sided triumph on Wednesday night. Freshman Kelly McNamee led St. Joseph's (1-2) with 13 points and six assists.

A McNamee trifecta five minutes into the game, her first points of the game, put the Lady Bears up 8-2 and they never turned back. St. Joseph's continued to extend their lead throughout the frame taking a 48-15 advantage into the break.

The Lady Cougars wouldn't threaten in the second half, the Lady Bears building their largest lead of the game at 44 halfway through the period on a pair of Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) free throws, which put St. Joseph's up 66-22.

St. Joseph's passed the ball effectively throughout the contest led by McNamee's game-high six helpers and combining for 24 assists, accounting for 77% of the team's made field goals. The Lady Bears led in all statistical categories, holding a 42-35 advantage on the glass and 15-6 steal advantage.

Sophomore Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) chipped in nine points and two blocks while Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes), Tara Gleason (Woodside, NY/Stella Maris) and Moran contributed eight points apiece. Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) grabbed a team-high seven caroms.
