Lady Bears Earn Split in Maine Trip Downing SMCC

SOUTH PORTLAND, ME – The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team defeated #23 Southern Maine CC, 72-60, in a USCAA matchup on Sunday afternoon. Junior Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) and sophomore Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) paced the Lady Bears tallying 12 points each as St. Joseph's improves to 4-3 on the season.

In the first of six USCAA contests on this season's slate, the Lady Bears got off to another fast start scoring 43 points in the opening stanza on 49 percent shooting (18-for-37). The Seawolves were unable to keep pace and the Lady Bears led by as many as 26 before taking 43-24 advantage into the break.

All 14 Lady Bears saw significant action and the Seawolves managed to chip away at the deficit in the second half, but the lead was never in any danger.

Marciniec's season-high 12 points came on 5-for-6 shooting and 2-for-2 from three-point land. Mangan finished in double-figures for the third time this season and also pulled down five rebounds and had three steals. Sophomore Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for her third straight game in double figures. Senior Elizabeth Shea (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) grabbed a team-high seven caroms.

Southern Maine CC (6-5) had three Seawolves in double figures led by Chelsea Sloat with 12 points and Ariel LeDuc with 11 points. Mikayla Burbank contributed a near double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

St. Joseph's returns to the court on Tuesday, November 7th, travelling to face cross-borough rival Brooklyn College in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
