Lady Bears Fall at UMass-Boston Tournament

BOSTON, MA – St. Joseph's women's basketball (0-2) lost a pair of non conference games at the UMass Tournament this past weekend.  The Lady Bears dropped the opener to host UMass before dropping the consolation game to Drew University.  Junior guard Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) was named to the All-Tournament team.

Opening Round – UMass-Boston 65, St. Joseph's 38

UMass-Boston put the Lady Bears in an early hole, scoring the game's first nine points en route to a 16-4 run. St. Joseph's would mount a comeback to bring the deficit to nine at 29-20 at the half. The game remained close with UMass-Boston holding an eight point with just over 14 minutes to play.

The game fell apart though for the Lady Bears as they committed 13 turnovers the rest of the way. The sloppy game saw 59 turnovers between the two teams and 28 steals. After getting the game to eight, the Beacons outscored the Lady Bears 29-10 to end the game.

Junior Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) and freshman Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) each had seven points to lead the Lady Bears. Kakavas also grabbed four rebounds. Marciniec led the team with eight boards.

Colleen Hooper led the Beacons with 15 points while Cammy Brown netted 11 and brought home eight rebounds.

Consolation Game – Drew 84, St. Joseph's 48

Once again the Lady Bears put themselves in a difficult position early, falling behind 9-0 for the second straight game. The Rangers extended the lead to 27 before taking a 46-23 lead into the break.

The Lady Bears tried to climb back into the game, cutting the deficit 16 with 15 minutes to play. But that would be as close as they would get as the Rangers went on a 15-4 run to put the game away.

Drew did most of their damage on the boards with a 55-26 advantage, including 19 on the offensive end. Those 19 offensive rebounds led to 27 second chance points as they outscored the Lady Bears 27-6 in that category.

Sophomore Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) led the Lady Bears with 10 points in a team high 24 minutes. Marciniec chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.

Drew guard Danielle Barber finished with a game high 22 points including four three point field goals. Logan Cavanaugh came off the bench to lead the game with ten rebounds.

The Lady Bears return to the court for a non-conference battle with Brooklyn foe Medgar Evers on Wednesday, November 24th. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
