Carbone Notches 200th Win as Lady Bears Win Third Straight Dismissing Yeshiva

HOLLISWOOD, NY – The Lady Bears had to overcome a two point halftime deficit in a close HVWAC battle as the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team defeated Yeshiva 74-66, on Thursday night. Sophomore Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and freshman Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) tallied 15 points each, both career highs, to lead four Lady Bears in double-figures.

St. Joseph's improves to 3-2 on the season and moves to 1-0 in conference, beginning their defense of their HVWAC title. The victory also marks head coach Frank P. Carbone's 200th career victory, who has a record of 200-184 in his 14th season at the helm. The Lady Bears also maintain a 20-1 record against the Maccabbees under Carbone and winners of the last 14, the sole loss coming in a 58-54 defeat in 2001.

In an opening frame that saw seven ties and five lead changes, Yeshiva led for most of the latter part of the opening half despite losing the turnover battle 19-9. The Maccabees shot 39.3 percent to build as large as a seven point advantage before taking a 34-32 lead at the break.

In the second stanza, the Lady Bears offense came alive shooting at a 39.0 percent clip and with a Moran jumper 4:30 into the period, St. Joseph's took the lead and would never trail again. The game would remain close as the  Lady Bears couldn't pull away and led by only three, 64-61, with five minutes left in regulation. However, St. Joseph's outscored Yeshiva 10-3 over the final five minutes to seal the milestone victory for coach Carbone.

Moran's and Doran's team-high 15 points came by way of strong second half performances as each netted 11 points and 10 points respectively. Doran also pulled down a team-high eight caroms and swatted away a pair of shots. Moran grabbed five boards and shot 7-for-9 from the charity stripe, all in the second half.

Junior guards Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) and Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) also finished in double figures with 11 points each coming on as reserves.

Yeshiva (0-6, 0-1 HVWAC) was led by Shir Fuchs's 23 points and a 14 point, 15 rebound double-double by Lauren Kempin.

The Lady Bears journey north to Maine this weekend to face Thomas College on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Southern Maine CC in a USCAA battle on Sunday at 1 p.m.
