Lady Bears Fall to FDU-Florham in NYU Tip-Off Opener

NEW YORK, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball suffered a 100-65 setback at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham in their season opener on Friday night at the NYU Women's Tip-Off Tournament at the Coles Athletic Center.

Junior Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and senior Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) paced the Lady Bears with 12 points each, combining to shoot 17-of-21 from the free throw line. Senior Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) and sophomore Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) added 10 points each to round out the four Lady Bears that scored in double figures. Doran and Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) shared team-high honors on the glass pulling down seven rebounds each as the Lady Bears also lost the rebounding battle 47-39.

FDU-Florham (2-0) saw five Devils in double figures led by 17 points from junior Tasza Carter and 16 points from Jalessa Lewis. Breana Wilson contributed 13 points for the Devils who shot 45 percent from the floor.

The first meeting of the two schools since 2002 was competitive through the early parts of the opening half. A Joanne Crimeni (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Ford) layup gave the Lady Bears a three point advantage, 16-13, with just over 12 minutes remaining in the frame. But the Devils went on a 29-5 run over the next 10 minutes to grab the lead for good and carried a 47-28 advantage at the break. The Devils pressure defense forced 20 Lady Bears turnovers in the half which they converted into 30 points.

The Lady Bears found no answers in the second half as the Devils opened the frame on a 14-6 run prompting a coach Frank P. Carbone timeout. The Devils continued to extend their lead on an improved 49 percent (19-for-39) shooting rate for the second half.

St. Joseph's (0-1) will face Clarkson in the consolation game tomorrow at 6 p.m. Clarkson lost to host NYU, 62-40, in the other-opening round matchup. NYU and FDU-Florham will square off for the championship at 8 p.m.
