Lady Bears Extend Streak Defeating Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, NY – Three Lady Bears scored in double figures as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball extended their win streak to three with a 66-40 road victory over Medgar Evers College on Sunday afternoon.

St. Joseph's (6-11) was led by the sophomore duo of Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) and Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic) who each netted 14 points and pulled down six rebounds, both team highs.  McNamee also handed eight assists in her fifth start of the season, the most helpers in a game since 2008 when assistant coach Annamarie Ciorciari dished out 11 against New Hampshire Tech.  Moran swiped a team-high five steals for the Lady Bears who had a season best 20 thefts.  Junior Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) improved her career high set last game, tallying 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Medgar Evers (2-18) received a big game from Yvanna Jack who netted 22 points and grabbed 25 rebounds, nearly matching the Lady Bears total (30).  Brittany Christie also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Baskets by Jack and Christie on the Cougars first two possessions gave them an early 4-0 lead, but St. Joseph's stormed ahead with a 12-0 run with McNamee scoring six points in the stretch.  Another jumper by McNamee pushed the lead to double-digits and the Lady Bears outscored the Cougars 12-2 over the final five minutes to take a 39-17 lead at the intermission.

The second stanza saw the Lady Bears maintain their 20 point advantage and Jack carried the load for the Cougars with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the half, but the Cougars were unable to cut into the deficit.  The lead ballooned to as many as 32 on a Stephanie Quick (Howard Beach, NY/Stella Maris) layup with five minutes left.  Quick finished with nine points, setting a new season-high.

The Lady Bears shot above 40 percent for the third straight game, connecting at a season second-best 42 percent (28-of-67), while the Cougars sank 37 percent (18-of-49) of their attempts.  The Lady Bears held a large advantage in turnovers, 35-9, parlaying the Cougar miscues into 37 points, 18 on the fast break.  

St. Joseph's returns to the hardwood kicking off a three-game home stand on Tuesday, January 31st hosting the College of Staten Island at Brooklyn Technical High School at 7:30 p.m.  Fans unable to attend the game can follow the live stats and video on www.sjcbears.com.
