Lady Bears Finish Unblemished HVWAC Season Defeating Vaughn

BRONX, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team completed a perfect season in conference play defeating Vaughn College, 58-26, on Tuesday evening at Hostos Community College.

The victory extends St. Joseph's (5-0 HVWAC) win-streak to seven and they sit one game below .500 at 10-11 overall.  

The Lady Bears were paced by junior Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) who had 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.  Junior Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) tallied nine points and sophomore Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic) added in eight points as all 10 Lady Bears saw at least 17 minutes of action and chipped in one field goal toward the victory.

Vaughn (0-10, 0-4 HVWAC) was led by Steffi Soler who produced a 14 point, 12 rebound, seven steal double-double helping the Warriors match their season-high this season.

The Lady Bears' scoring came in pairs as Stephanie Quick (Howard Beach, NY/Stella Maris) knocked down a jumper and trifecta, followed by a pair of layups from Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis), followed by a trifecta and jumper by Mangan, opening an 18-2 lead over the first 10 minutes.   The defense held Vaughn to an opponent-low four points in the first half, leading 30-4 at the break.

The second stanza saw the Warriors increase their offensive output five-fold and St. Joseph's outscored Vaughn 28-22 in the second half to complete the victory.

The Lady Bears shot a season-high 49 percent (26-of-53) for the contest while the Warriors finished with 19 percent (13-of-69) shooting.  The Lady Bears held a small edge on the glass, 23-20.  

St. Joseph's hits the road for their next two games before the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference tournament.  The Lady Bears return to action on Friday, February 10, travelling to Chestnut Hill, MA to face Pine Manor College in a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
