Women's Basketball Gameday: Lady Bears vs. Mount Saint Mary

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- After taking their game to Colorado Springs for the Colorado College New Year's Ball, St. Joseph's (7-5) returns home to Brooklyn Technical High School taking on Mount Saint Mary College (0-8) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 4th.

The Lady Bear Facts

Last Time Out: St. Joseph's rallied from an 11-point deficit and took a late second-half lead, but came away from their Colorado trip empty handed, dropping a 60-57 decision to University of Wisconsin-Stout on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bears were led by Kelly McNamee and Erica Eddy who each add 13 points.

St. Joseph's looks to pick up their first win of the New Year after finishing December with a 4-1 mark. The month of January has been kind in years past to Coach Carbone and the Lady Bears with January of 2009 being the last time St. Joseph's posted a losing record during the pivotal month.

St. Joseph's is led by McNamee who averages a career- and team-high 12.7 points per game and was the Lady Bears leading scorer during the Colorado trip averaging 12.0 points per game over the two games.

Also contributing to the St. Joseph's cause is Taylor Raccuglia who puts up 11.0 points per game and is second on the team averaging 8.0 boards per game. The junior is a stat-sheet stuffer for the Lady Bears averaging 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.

Junior Samantha Retas has been St. Joseph's double-double force this season with four on the year. The forward puts up 9.8 points per game and corrals a team-high 10.1 rebounds per game.

St. Joseph's has thrived on the defensive end of the floor this season holding their opponents to 29.9 percent shooting and have used the blocked shot to their advantage averaging 5.7 per game including nine against Wisconsin-Stout.

Last Time Out: The Knights suffered an 82-47 setback to Rutgers-Newark on December 9th in a game that saw Mount Saint Mary surrender 12 treys and commit 18 turnovers. The Knights were led by Natalie Candarelli and Lauren Romao who both tallied nine points in the loss.

Mount Saint Mary, picked second in the Skyline preseason coaches' poll, has struggled to start the season losing eight in a row under first year coach Michael Coppolino. The Knights have owned the Skyline having won the regular season title each of the last 14 years.The Knights struggle on the offensive end of the floor averaging only 53.9 points per game while shooting only 34.6 percent from the floor. Mount Saint Mary also has issues on the glass as they hold a -14.1 rebounding margin.

The two schools have a common opponent in the College of Staten Island. The Lady Bears suffered a 75-62 defeat to the Dolphins on November 16th while the Knights fell to CSI 76-68 on December 3rd.

The Knights are led by 2012-13 First Team All-Skyline member Rachel Perrone who averages a team-high 12.1 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Also providing scoring support are Romao and Candarelli who both average double figures with Romao putting up 10.9 points per game and Candarelli chipping in 10.3 points per game.
