Porcasi Collects Second Skyline Rookie of the Week Honor; Marino and O'Neill Land on Honor Roll

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) freshman guard Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) was selected as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for the second time this season as announced in the league's weekly sports report released earlier today.

Porcasi averaged 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in leading the women's basketball team to a 2-0 week and their fourth straight win.

After posting 17 points and seven rebounds in a win over Purchase on Monday, the freshman helped complete an improbable comeback over sibling rivals St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Thursday as the Lady Bears outscored the Golden Eagles 7-1 over the final nine seconds. Trailing by one, Porcasi stole an inbounds pass and was fouled, calmly making both free throws with 1.1 seconds left for the 62-61 triumph. The freshman would finish with a game-high 21 points and her third game with 20-or-more points.

Porcasi currently leads the Skyline in three-pointers made (35) and three-point field goal percentage (.393) and is ranked second in free throw percentage (.863).

Also recognized for their strong play is sophomore Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) and senior Matt O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) who both were named to the weekly honor roll.

Marino receives honor roll recognition for the fourth time after averaging a near double-double with 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds, scoring 20 points with 14 rebounds against SJC Long Island for her fourth double-double of the season.

O'Neill lands on the honor roll for the third time third time dropping a career-high 36 points—most by a Bear since 2004—with eight rebounds and six steals in the Bears' come-from-behind victory over Sarah Lawrence.  For the three-game week, the senior averaged 20.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals.

The Bears and Lady Bears return to action on Tuesday, January 12 with a road Skyline Conference test at SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Panthers currently sit in second place in both league standings. The Lady Bears put a four-game streak on the line opening the twin bill at 5 p.m. and the Bears look to sweep the season series—after an 81-63 victory at home in December—in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
