Breen Nets 17, O'Donnell Scores 1,700th Point as Women's Basketball Defeats Old Westbury to Close out 2021

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) led three Bears in double-figures and the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit to capture a 68-57 Skyline Conference win over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon at Farmingdale State College.

How it Happened

Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) drained a triple one minute in to notch her 1,700th point and the teams traded the lead four times early with Emma Kiley's (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) layup putting the Bears (2-7, 2-4) ahead 12-11 at the 4:20 mark of the 1st quarter. But the hosts responded with nine unanswered and carried a 22-17 lead into the first break.

The Panthers (1-3, 1-3) stretched their lead to 27-19 over the first four minutes but SJC scored the next 10 points with Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) powering the spurt with five points, her triple putting the Bears ahead 29-17 with three minutes before the intermission. Kennedy would score all seven of her points in the period to lead all scorers and the Bears won the period 20-12 and took a 37-34 lead into the lockers.

With SJC holding on to a one-point lead, the Bears were sparked by four points each from Fatima Monsour (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) and Breen within an 8-0 run to stretch their lead to nine, 45-36. The Bears hed the Panthers to just three field goals and 16 percent shooting in the period and extended their lead to 53-41 after three quarters.

Old Westbury edged out SJC 16-15 in the fourth quarter but couldn't get any closer than six as Kiley scored 10 of the Bears' 15 points in the final 10 minutes to help preserve the win.

For the Bears

  • Breen shot 7-of-15 from the field with a trio of three-pointers to lead the Bears with 17 points. She also had two rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
