League-Unbeaten Mount Saint Mary Stymies Women's Basketball

NEWBURGH, N.Y. —  Junior Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) turned in a near double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team fell short on the road against a streaking Mount Saint Mary College squad who remained unbeaten in Skyline Conference play with a 93-71 victory on Tuesday evening.

How It Happened

After a Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) triple opened the scoring for the Bears (2-11, 2-8), the Knights responded with eight unanswered for a 10-3 lead. The hosts later maintained a seven-point lead before a 10-3 Bears run knotted the game at 20-all and Mount Saint Mary took a 23-20 lead at the end of one.

The Bears stumbled in the second stanza despite seven points from Briana Gomez (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) and six from Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) —  the duo accounting for all the SJC scoring in the period. The Knights opened the frame on a 13-4 run to build a double-digit lead and led by as many as 19 before carrying a 49-33 advantage into the lockers.

Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) scored nine points in the third as the Bears won the period, 20-16, and pulled as close as 11 but couldn't shrink the deficit any further despite an improved 43 percent connect rate in the second half.

For the Bears

  • Kiley recorded her ninth career 20-point game and fell one rebound shy of a double-double.
  • Making her second collegiate start, Kennedy scored 18 points with five three-pointers, seven boards, three assists, and two steals.
  • Fatima Monsour (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) netted eight points and secured seven caroms.
  • Gomez finished with seven points and five boards.
  • Provino matched her career-high grabbing nine rebounds to go along with six points and five assists.
  • The Bears shot a season-high 43 percent (28-for-65) but the Knights had 21 more field goal attempts and also shot over 40 percent (36-for-86) and led in points off turnovers, 29-4.
