Kiley Goes for 31, O’Donnell Scores 1,800th Point as Women’s Basketball Wins Two-in-a-Row Over Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. —  Playing for the second time in four days, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) rolled to an 80-55 road win over Purchase College on Tuesday evening. Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) turned in a career game with 31 points to lead four Bears in double figures, which included Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) who had 14 points to reach the 1,800-point scoring mark.

How it Happened

After an opening triple by the hosts, the Bears (4-12, 4-9)  scored 11 straight and eventually built a double-digit lead before Kiley's eight points powered a 17-9 lead after one period.

The Panthers (1-13, 1-10) scored the first 10 points of the second stanza to take the lead at 19-17 as the Bears went cold over the first four minutes. But Kiley's putback layup followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Lauren Duggan (Breezy Point, N.Y./St, Savior) and Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) started a 15-0 spurt that put the Bears back up 13 before carrying a 36-26 lead into the lockers.

SJC broke the game open in the third as Kiley went off for 15 on 6-of-8 in the quarter and the Bears shot 60 percent (9-of-15) in a lopsided 27-12 frame that ballooned the lead to 25, 63-38, and Purchase couldn't get cut into the deficit in the fourth.

For the Bears

  • Kiley compiled her first 30-point game on 12-of-17 shooting with one three-pointer and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, also grabbing eight rebounds.
  • O'Donnell becomes the third player in team history to score 1,800 points stuffing the stat sheet with nine rebounds, five steals, two assists, and two blocks.
  • Breen chipped in 12 points, with two three-pointers, four assists, and three rebounds.
  • Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) added 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers, with three assists, two steals, and a block.
  • The Bears shot 42 percent (30-of-71) and dominated paint scoring 40-22.
