Five in Double Figures Not Enough for Women’s Basketball Against SJC Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) scored a team-high 18 points and Briana Gomez (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) netted a career-high 13 points, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team fell in a 92-81 shootout to sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Wednesday evening at The Hill Center.

An evenly matched opening 20 minutes saw the Bears (6-15, 5-12) trail by four before the Golden Eagles (12-7, 9-7) broke away in the second half led by Alyssa Adomaites, who finished with a game-high 44 points.

How it Happened

O'Donnell scored four quick points as the Bears built an early 8-4 lead before the Golden Eagles answered with a 12-3 run. Gomez provided a spark off the bench draining two early triples to keep the bears close. Brooklyn fell behind by as many as seven in the second stanza before tying the game at 34-all and headed into the lockers trailing 44-40, with Gomez leading the Bears with 10 points.

The Bears came out of the lockers strong as Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) sunk a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one, but the offense would stall and Long Island would shoot 50 percent in the quarter to build a 68-55 lead after three.

O'Donnell and Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) would each score eight points in the fourth, but the Bears couldn't bring the deficit down to single digits until briefly late in the contest.

 For the Bears

  • O'Donnell grabbed 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and pulled within one of tying Samantha Retas '15 as the program rebounding leader with 958.
  • Gomez assembled her career-high 13 on  3-for-4 shooting from three-point land and 5-of-10 overall. She also grabbed four rebounds and registered a block.
