Women’s Basketball Tripped Up by Mount Saint Vincent in Play4Kay Game

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) scored a game-high 21 points and Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) pulled down a game-best 14 rebounds in a double-double effort, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team fell at home, 79-64, to the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The team wore pink jerseys in raising awareness of all women's cancers. Fans can support the team's fundraising efforts for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund by visiting SJCBears.com/Play4Kay

How it Happened

A back-and-forth opening quarter saw the teams trade the lead five times. After Fatima Monsour's (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) triple put the Bears (6-16, 5-13) up three , 13-10, the Dolphins (15-4, 13-4) responded with 11 straight spanning the end of the first into the second quarter for a 13-21 lead.

A triple from Kiley and a bucket from O'Donnell brought the deficit back down to three before another CSMV 10-0  run stretched their lead back to double-digits and the Bears trailed 41-29 at the intermission.

The deficit hovered around the double digit mark for much of the second half with the Bears trying to get back to within striking distance. Five quick points from O'Donnell early in the fourth pulled the Bears within six and another pair of free throws midway through the frame brought the Bears within five, 64-59, but that would be the closest SJC would get with the visitors pulling away from the free throw line in the bonus.

For the Bears

  • O'Donnell's also added eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal to her game-high 21.
  • Kiley scored 13 points to go along with her game-high 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She also rejected a game-best four shots and dished out two assists.
  • Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) drained 5-of-11 from behind the arc for 15 points to round out three in double figures. She also grabbed seven boards and handed out four assists.
  • Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) dished out seven assists and added five points and two rebounds.
