Women's Basketball Falls in Seahawk Invite Title Game to Hunter; Breen Named to All-Tournament Team

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD. — After defeating hosts St. Mary's College (Maryland) on Friday, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's basketball team met Hunter College in the Seahawk Invitational championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Bears (1-1) once again saw a quartet in double figures with Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Mollow) and Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) each dropping 12. However, the Hawks (2-1) took the 70-51 win and first place at the season-opening tournament.

Averaging 19 points over two games, Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) was named to the All-Tournament team.

How it Happened

Hunter began the game on an 11-2 run before the Bears scored the next 10 unanswered to win the first quarter, 12-11.

The beginning of the second saw the lead exchange hands five times. SJBK held on to an 18-13 advantage at 7:34 behind triples from Donovan and Hurt. Tied at 23 with 4:29 left in the half, foul shots gave the Hawks a two-point advantage before growing to 13 by halftime, 38-25.

Two minutes into the third, Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) banked a pair of free throws to reduce the SJBK deficit to nine. It was the closest the Bears came to the Hawks as the Lexington Avenue outfit possessed a 19-point stronghold in the period. Hunter led by as many as 22, 62-40, in the fourth before sealing the 70-51 result.

For the Bears

  • Breen finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and as many steals.
  • Hurt came a carom short of a double-double. She also nabbed a pair of takeaways.
  • Along with 12 points, Donovan totaled five points and four steals.
  • Kiley had 11 boards and 10 points.
  • Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) collected six boards.
  • The Bears and Hawks will meet again in 17 days' time (Tuesday, November 29) at The Hill Center; SJBK's home opener.
