Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat to Manhattanville in Skyline Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's basketball team opened their Skyline Conference slate with a 70-38 road defeat to Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened 

Three-pointers from Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) saw the Bears (1-2, 0-1) control the tempo for much of the first quarter. Trailing 13-6, the Valiants (3-0, 1-0) used a 10-run to take the lead, closing the period up 16-14.

Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) tied the game to at 16 to start the second period but the hosts scored 15 of the next 21 points thanks in large part to a 7-0 run midway through the quarter.

The Bears were unable to cause chaos as Manhattanville's lead increased to 20 by the end of the third quarter, 50-30, before sealing the 32-point win down the stretch.

For the Bears

  • Donovan led the team with 12 points with four rebounds.
  • Destiny Hurt (Elminst, NY Sewanhaka) finished with 10 points and three boards.
  • Donovan and Hurt each had three assists.
  • Kiley led the team with 11 rebounds.
  • Kennedy had eight points and caroms.
