BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In a game that went down to the wire, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's basketball team outlasted Yeshiva 57-53 on Thursday evening from The Hill Center. A trio of Bears scored in double figures, led by Emma Kiley's (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Mollow) 22 points. Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
How it Happened
Both sides found a rhythm despite a slow couple of minutes to begin the game. A Breen triple put the Bears (4-4, 2-2) up 5-2 but the Maccabees (3-6, 3-5) kept pace, snatching the lead back and possessing a 13-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Yeshiva continued to find the basket in the second stanza, holding a nine-point lead at the 7:40 mark. Kiley, Breen, and Hurt combined for 10 points in the quarter to close the gap to 30-22 at the half.
St. Joseph's were put in a 14-point hole at 7:59 in the third, Yeshiva's largest lead of the night. Kiley, on 4-of-7 from the floor, along with contributions from Breen and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) slashed the deficit to 46-38 by the conclusion of the period.
After the visitors hit a free throw to begin the fourth, the navy and gray scored the next seven points, with Breen banking a trey, to level the score at 47. The quarter saw three more ties and the lead exchanged hands as many times. Hurt tied the game at 1:16 from the line while Breen sealed the victory from the stripe roughly 30 seconds later.
