Women's Basketball Tops Sarah Lawrence on the Road

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team avenged their early-season loss to Sarah Lawrence College, earning a 77-61 triumph on Saturday afternoon.

Winners of four of their last five, the Bears (8-7, 6-5) were paced by 20-point double-doubles from Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and a 17-point showing from Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy).

How it Happened

The Bears placed the Gryphons (5-10, 3-7) in an 11-point hole early. Kumi Tamura brought the hosts to within eight but the navy and gray netted 11 of the final 14 points in the opening period to take a 24-8 lead into the second.

Hurt scored 11 points in the second, including a perfect 5-of-5 mark from the free-throw line as the Bears' advantage grew to 30, the largest of the contest. SJBK took their 46-18 margin into the half.

Both sides scored 17 points in the third quarter but the Bears held on to a sizable advantage, 63-35, entering the fourth.

Sarah Lawrence began the final period with a 9-0 run, narrowing their deficit to 19. St. Joseph's were able to hold off the Gryphons, preventing them to close the gap by any more than 16, en route to the 77-61 result.

For the Bears

  • Hurt finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. She shot an efficient 8-of-9 from the foul line.

  • Kiley posted 22 points and 12 boards while registering a pair of blocks and as many steals.

  • Kennedy collected five caroms and dished out three assists to go with her 17 points.

  • Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) had nine rebounds and seven points.

  • Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) matched Adeoye's rebound total and distributed four assists.

  • Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y. /Archbishop Molloy) had eight boards and three assists.
