Telford Tabbed Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week

NEW YORK — Following a week where she averaged 14 points and six assists, freshman Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) of the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team was named Rookie of the Week by the Skyline Conference on Tuesday. Telford is the team's first Rookie of the Week selection since Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who earned it three times during the 2019-20 season.

Against Yeshiva last Wednesday, Telford dropped 13 points to go along with a team-best seven assists and four steals. Seven of her 13 points came in the final 2:11 of the contest, sealing the Bears' 82-78 triumph over the Maccabees.

Behind a 15-point effort, Telford played an instrumental role for the navy and gray on Saturday against the US Merchant Marine Academy. She shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line and dished out a team-high five assists while collecting four rebounds.

The Brooklyn native currently leads the team with 3.2 assists per game, good for a place in the Skyline top 10. She also cracks the top five on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.

Teammate Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) was recognized with a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll as she averaged 20 points and 11.5 rebounds in the Bears' 1-1 week, headlined by a 27-point showing against the Mariners.

The Bears step away from league play on Tuesday, January 31 as local rivals Pratt Institute visit The Hill Center at 5 p.m. before resuming Skyline action on Saturday, February 4 at 1 p.m. against sibling school St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Long Island). Live stats and video of both contests can be found on sjbkathletics.com/live.
