Trio in Double Figures Lead to Women’s Basketball’s Season-Opening Win Over Pratt

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team picked up a 77-50 win over Pratt Institute in the program's first game under first-year head coach Joe Giacchi on Wednesday night.

Three Bears – Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka), Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), and Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) – all scored in double-figures en route to the Bears' 15-point triumph.

How it Happened

The Bears opened the contest on a 10-0 run. They led by as many as 12 before ending the quarter with a 23-13 advantage. Hurt went 4-of-7 while Donovan shot 3-of-6 in the period.

The second stanza saw the navy and gray take their largest lead of the evening, 40-20 with 3:50 on the clock. The Cannoneers scored five unanswered to end the half, 40-25.

Donovan shot 60 percent from the field in the third quarter. However, the visitors were able to trim their deficit to eight by the end of the frame, 53-45, thanks to a two-minute-plus scoring spurt. 

St. Joseph's brought their lead back to double figures, distancing themselves from the Cannoneers with three minutes remaining in the game. The Bears earned the 70-55 victory thanks to a 10-4 run to close the game.

For the Bears

  • Hurt led all scorers with 24 points and pulled a team-high 10 rebounds. She also forced five steals.

  • Donovan's 22 points are a career-best., adding five rebounds and three assists to her stat line.

  • Perez finished her collegiate debut with 11 points, five assists, four rebounds, and as many steals.

  • Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y./Bryant) posted a game-high seven steals to go with five boards and four dimes.

  • Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman) also made her debut, scoring eight points and pulling three rebounds.
